Shopify vs WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Headless and Wix

Shopify or WooCommerce. Shopify or BigCommerce. Shopify or custom headless. Shopify or Wix. Four comparisons, and the answer is the same every time. Here is why, and the one case where it changes.

Shopify or WooCommerce

Shopify, and there is no real discussion. WooCommerce is an outdated platform. It does not have the capabilities Shopify has, and you cannot scale a business on it the way you can on Shopify.

The framing that matters is not features, it is problems. As a business owner you want fewer problems, not more. WooCommerce gives you more of them: plugin conflicts, hosting you are responsible for, updates that break checkout, and a stack nobody owns end to end.

Shopify or BigCommerce

Shopify again. A much bigger marketplace of tools, far more apps, and better tracking for your Meta ads. That last point is not a small detail when paid social is your main acquisition channel.

There is one real exception. If you are running something grey or black hat, you carry a genuine risk of getting banned by Shopify Payments, and that risk has to be priced in.

Even so, look at where the dropshippers are. They are on Shopify, taking that risk on purpose, because it is simply the best platform to run ads from.

Shopify or custom headless

Shopify. Headless is difficult to set up and difficult to change, which is the part people underestimate. Every small merchandising tweak becomes a developer ticket.

The analytics are the bigger problem. On headless your tracking ends up all over the place and you have to bolt on separate analytics to see what a standard Shopify store shows you by default.

It makes sense in very niche scenarios, where you have something genuinely specific, or the founder is technical enough to solve the issues personally. Because that is what it comes down to. The founder is the one who ends up fixing it.

Shopify or Wix

Shopify, comfortably. Wix is horrible for e-commerce specifically. You cannot track your orders properly, which undermines every advertising decision you make afterwards.

It is very easy to set up a website on Wix, and that is exactly why people choose it. But the goal was never to have a website. The goal is to make sales, and sales are very hard to achieve on a Wix store.

The pattern

The answer is the same four times because the question underneath is always the same. Which platform removes problems, and which one hands them to you.

Cheaper or easier on day one usually means more expensive every day after it, paid in tracking you cannot trust and changes you cannot make quickly.
