E-commerce Analytics Tools, Ranked. A Free Spreadsheet Won
I ranked every e-commerce analytics tool people actually use. The free one won, and it is not close. Here is the full tier list and what each tool quietly gets wrong.
S tier: spreadsheet models
A spreadsheet is still the most effective way to check your numbers, and the reason is not the spreadsheet. It is you.
When you type everything in manually, you know your numbers. You have handled every figure. You notice when something looks off because you have a feel for what normal looks like.
The whole point: analytics is not about having the dashboard that shows everything. It is about you having the knowledge of your numbers. A dashboard can give you the first and still leave you without the second.
A tier: Northbeam and Triple Whale
These are genuinely powerful. You can track effectively everything and know exactly what is happening inside your store day by day. If you want a single place where the whole business is visible, this is the category.
Two caveats. They are expensive, and the connection is fragile. Triple Whale will sometimes disconnect from Meta, and you will be looking at wrong numbers without any obvious sign that anything broke. That is the risk with any tool you trust completely: when it is wrong, you do not catch it.
B tier: Meta Ads Manager
Meta's tracking is good, and it gets better the more you spend on Meta. If Meta is your main channel you will see genuinely useful data in there.
The problem is attribution drift in both directions. Sometimes Meta over attributes, sometimes it under attributes. It is not reporting what the business did. It is reporting what Meta saw the business do. Those are different stories and only one of them pays your bills.
C tier: Shopify dashboard
Good when you are starting out. You can see your best selling products, your revenue, a conversion rate, enough to get oriented.
Two real limits. The conversion rate figure is flawed. And for tracking ads it is horrible, because it attributes last click and only with cookies. In 2026 that means it is systematically blind to most of what your advertising actually did.
C tier: Klaviyo analytics
Klaviyo is better in one respect, it sits further down the funnel and you get email performance next to everything else. Looking at Klaviyo data inside Klaviyo is genuinely useful.
But it over attributes, and it does it in a specific direction. Klaviyo has a tendency to steal sales from Meta. A customer your ads found, who then happened to open a flow email before buying, gets counted as an email sale. Read Klaviyo and Meta side by side and you will find you have more revenue on paper than you have in the bank.
So why does free still win
Triple Whale is very powerful and very expensive. Spreadsheets are free. If the expensive tool won on capability alone, this would be an easy call.
It does not, because the goal was never maximum visibility. The best dashboard is not the one that shows the most. It is the one that makes you know your numbers. Building the model yourself forces that knowledge in a way that reading someone else's dashboard never will.
Use the tools. Just do not confuse having access to a number with understanding it.
